Giveaway winner and a coat dilemma

The winner of December's giveaway is Nina A! Congrats and please email me your mailing address to Mollysewsblog/at/gmail/com

On to my coat question: should I sew on the cuffs or not? They are just pinned on for the pictures.
The wool is thick and therefore the cuffs are really thick. I think they look space age and costume-y. The main detail of the coat is the inverted v of the buttons and I don't want the cuffs to detract from that.
Sans cuffs...

What do you think? Should I add them or just leave it simple?

Happy New Year!

  1. forgive me if this posts double but Bloglovin made my comment disappear!

I like it better sans cuffs; the jacket looks more sleek that way. Happy New year!

  2. For me the coat is more elegant without the cuffs - they seem to detract from the lovely lapels.

  3. My 2 cents: no cuffs, please. The pop of color at the collar works well alone.

    1. That's actually just the underlining of flannel. The double collar has a similar construction to the cuffs, so now I don't know how that will look either...

  4. I prefer without the cuffs as well.

  5. I agree that they seem disproportionate to the sleeves. Would you add anything decorative to the hemmed sleeve or simply leave them plain?

  6. No, I don't think they enhance your jacket at all ~ sometimes less is best ... J

  7. You may do cuffs, but not these ones. I would re-make the cuffs with lining material which would take some of the bulk, I would also redraft the under cuff (make it a bit smaller and ease it when sewing so it turns) that would take away more bulk. You may want to look at this collar tutorial to understand what I mean. http://www.fashion-incubator.com/archive/a-tale-and-tutorial-of-three-collars/
Your coat is looking really good, should you decide to put the cuffs in, re-do them.

    1. I understand what you mean. The pattern is for a coat dress, so I think I need to adapt it to the thicker fabric.

  8. Your coat looks great. I would say no to the cuffs partly because of your tiny frame, I think they will be over powering. If you were 6 foot tall and a UK size 10 then I think they would be fine but I think from reading your blog that you are of a smaller scale.

    1. Yeah, I am only 5 ft even and they are somewhat "oversized" even for normal height people.

  9. I like the cuffs as I think it balances all the darker blue but I agree with Carmen, and redo them.

  10. I like the contrast of the cuffs but perhaps they could be reconfigured. Either with a lining material or maybe leave one of the them off completely. I agree the material is bulky, especially when quadrupled.

I think the cuffs add a nice, tailored look to the coat.

  11. It does currently go to my ankles, but that will not be the finished length! I just wanted to be sure it wouldn't be too short and I can always cut more off!

  12. I would leave them off, I agree with you that it gives it a space age look. The coat is really coming along and looks great!

  13. I think it's just beautiful and certainly doesn't need a cuff. Can't wait to see the finished article.
