Next up: Summery Sundress

I went to a Birchbox event last week on braiding hair.. Basically you got your hair braided, some champagne and cupcakes and a birchbox of hair products to try out. It was fun and I chose the braid that wrapped around my head like a crown. I cna braid and french braid my own hair, but something this complicated is beyond my abilities.
I bought this printed linen to make this sundress, a See & Sew pattern. It's a medium, but I can shrink it down a bit. If you look at the line drawing, it is backless and wraps and ties in the front. That seems simple and delightful for the hot weather. Plus it's a halter top, so that is adjustable too.
It looks cute in white, but I think that would be too see-through for my liking.
Off to work!

Flouncy White Dress- First Pix in Chicago!

Just to recap, this was my pattern inspiration. An Azzaro cotton dress that cost $2,741. Lol. I "drafted" my own pattern for this one, sort of. I used the bodice of the pattern I am going to make my grey interview dress out of, to test for fit. That turned out to be wise, since I really need to shorten the bodice at least an inch. The sleeves I drafted on paper to be five lump scallops. The skirt is just a drindl, a big rectangle gathered at the waist and the ruffle is the same.
 On to construction:
It was easy to make. I originally did the side-boob darts, but this fabric was a pain. It really likes to stretch out on the diagonal. So I ended up with some wildly pointing uneven lines. I took them out and left it loose. Instead of waist darts, I made small gathers like the inspiration dress. It's not very obvious, but it makes the bodice looser. The back has waist darts. Pictures were taken walking the dog to the river, which sis a few blocks away.
All layers of this dress are doubled up because the fabric was so sheer. I thought it would be pretty lightweight, but it is rather heavy. The bodice and back were done first and turned right side out because the fabric also frays terribly. I then made the sleeves (again, doubled) and just top-stitched them down. They are floppy and cute.
The waistband is about an inch wide and drops a little below my natural waist line. Fortunately not to the "dropped waist" point that I hate so much (and Lisette- I know I am not the only one!)
The skirt was easy to make. It is double layer rectangle that I gathered at the waist to the appropriate size. I then added the bottom ruffle to it. The ruffle was easy because it is just folded in half and attached, so there was no need to hem! Yay!
Below you can see the Molly's Ew for this project. I put in the metal zipper in a very half-assed, on-the-machine-with-no-basting fashion, and you reap what you sew. (Edit- I went back to spell sow correctly, but I made a pun! By accident! It stays.) So I have an incongruous, semi-exposed zipper on a girly dress. Meh, at least it's a side zipper. Maybe the lump of hair on the back of my head will distract you!
While slightly warm for today's 93 degree weather, I am sure it will get a lot of use. The ruffle bounces while I walk and it looks very nice. Overall, pretty nice and I'm glad to be finished with it.

Is anyone else obsessed with the weather on their phone? I have New Orleans (77 rain), Chicago (93), Salem, Or  (parents- 67 rain) and Ulsan, South Korea (brother- 75 nighttime). I find it really interesting to compare the weather in my four places of interest. I would add Paris, but the weather there remind me very much of Oregon- gray and rainy.

Anyways, I made a curtain for the bedroom, so soon I will have some of the house to show you. I am also reading a play in French to try to improve my French, since I have been applying to French and History job openings. More on that later!

Vogue Summer Dress

I bought this pattern and fabric at Hancock last weekend on sale, since there is no way I would pay $30 for a pattern. I really liked the back detail and thought that I would maybe make up my red silk in this pattern.
I made it out of rayon challis, which is quite nice for the 70-80 degree spring in New Orleans. We went to French Quarter and took pictures in Jackson Square.
I shortened the skirt 4-5 inches, but I did not take into consideration the narrow hem for a circle skirt. It is too long for my taste, especially for a summer dress. It is very comfortable, though!
It has a slightly raised waist, but not quite empire-waisted. I think I need more waist definition. I did see a pregnant woman wearing a romper, which made me shudder.
The back is really pretty and I hand-picked the zipper like usual. We were going to go to the horse races, but apparently racing season is over! I was convinced it went Thanksgiving to Easter every year, and now I am sad.
So, while I will not be making this out of beautiful red silk, it is certainly a nice summer dress that will get a lot of use!

Any thoughts for a beautiful pattern for 3 yards of red silk?

70s Sundress Pictures

This is the pattern I used, McCalls 4534 from the 70s. It was dated, I think 1975. Contrary to how it appears, the cape is sewn in to the neckline, so I left that off and made the girl in blue. The fabric and pattern were gifts from my mom. The fabric has tiny white flowers.
It was in the 60s and somewhat sunny today, so it was much better for pictures. We stopped to take pictures on the way to the library, in front of my favorite mansion on St Charles Avenue. I call it the Wedding Cake House, since it looks like one to me- very elaborate and frou-frou.
I understand the logic of having front center seams, since the skirt is cut to be shaped without making darts. But I always feel like you get that weird line, and it wants to settle between my legs, instead of being smooth. Pah.

Isn't this house awesome?
The print loses some of the details in the pictures. It has an empire waist seam, and a top-stitched yoke that makes the straps. It was my first attempt at adding padded bra cups, which was fairly successful. I can take little credit for these puppies.
I think it is somewhat snug, but Andrew is quite pleased. He seems to think this dress is very sexy. I guess most of what I sew are not-tight, work dresses. Maybe I should continue my running, which I have not done one single day in the new year. That would make it a bit looser.
The back. I think the lack of darts contributed to those pulling wrinkles. I have never done a sway back adjustment, but this dress could have used one. I handpicked this zipper too, and it looks good, but not awesome.
Overall, I am mostly pleased with this dress. When the weather warms up, it will be nice to wear around. And any dress that doesn't require the torture of a strapless bra is a win in my book!!!

Black and white sundress- Finished!

Yesterday I said all the things I have to say about remaking this pattern, so here's the pix:
The wiener dog pulling a "I just want to SIT in the sun."
From the back, for both of us.
The print is big stylized roses, although it also reminds me of a giraffe.
Overall, I am pleased. What do you think?

Black and White Sundress

Orange juice made using my awesome Silex Juice-it, in my cute mug from the estate sale. Oh, plus a little vodka; let's be real here, it's the weekend.

Tomorrow it will be sunnier, so I will take a picture of me wearing the dress. I am mostly happy with it. I made all the notes (changes on a post-it) I made from the first time I made it- too bad I stopped doing that. It's not like I can remember anything for more than 15 minutes! Lol! Next time however, I will make a facing for the bodice. I dislike the bias binding. I cut off the 5 inches Molly-from-last-summer suggested and it's still below my knee. That's probably because I lazied out and hemmed it on the machine. Pish posh!
I don't know about anyone else, but I am sick of sewing from patterns. I need a challenge! So, I have decided to draft myself a pattern for the perfect sweetheart neckline strapless dress.

Like the yellow part of Drew Barrymore's awesome dress.
or, this Michael Kors dress. I like the cheetah print lace.
That will be my goal for the weekend- we'll see how it goes!

Wish me luck!

P.S. I have done this before- see here (copy of a designer dress) and here (marie antoinette halloween costume)

Randomness

This is all I have accomplished on my next dress. It requires a lot of gathering, and I wasn't in a gathering mood. I think it will look pretty striking when I'm finished.
Andrew also brought me some sauces from the UK. One is brown sauce, and the picture is of onions and apples. The other is HP sauce, which Andrew says tastes like "crappy BBQ sauce." Soon I will taste them for myself.

Wish me luck!

So far, so good!

Good things:

1. It is standardized testing week, and while that makes the students insane, I have nothing to do or prepare each night. Wonderful! Now I can focus my energies on margaritas!

2. I found out that I officially have a permanent position for next year, although I don't know what subject yet. Hopefully 6th grade, cross your fingers for me!!!!

3. I got my awesome clothing labels in the mail today!
4. My aunt cleaned out her stash of vintage button and now I have 6 billion. I need to think of something red, with lots of buttons!
5. I have cut out all of the pieces of my next dress...
6. My boyfriend is back from his 2 week trip...and he nearly owes me my 100 follower dinner. Yay! (This should be #1, but I don't feel like renumbering...)

7. I just saw the cutest stray cat- I think I will start feeding it. It is tortoiseshell with green eyes and a nub tail.

I hope you all are having a good week too!

My week off is winding down...

Here's how my dress is progressing:

All it needs now is a zipper and a hem...

I bought this interfacing at Jo-Ann. I have given up on thinking I will buy hair canvas; it is too expensive and I don't like buying fabric online. Fabric is tactile, the internet is not. This is designed to be a lightweight iron-on interfacing for light tailoring, which I think matches the needs of my cape. See the cape inspiration here: http://mollysews.blogspot.com/2009/12/in-progress-cape.html

Here is the cape pattern: I started this over a year ago, if I remember correctly, I am making the blue/beige version.

I bought this fabric to make a new version of this Advance pattern: see the original here!

The print is very large, and that seems like what I am liking lately. It's not terribly summery, but I like it!
Anyways, now I have to start writing lesson plans and making up activities for this next week- we are reviewing for the big LEAP test in a week. I bought a big tub of candy and am making up team games to review. Hopefully, the week will be fun, and they will all do well on the tests!

1950s Sun Dress

I got a giant bag of vintage patterns on freecycle.org and miraculously they were all my size! This pattern was adorable, and perfect for summer, so I made it first.

It is an Advance pattern 9077, size 12. It does not have a date printed on it, but it looks very 50s to me.

It was a very simple and fun dress to make. The only confusing part was that the pattern pieces did not say how mant of each to cut, so I wasted quite a bit of time pinning and repinning pieces until it all fit and made sense. I ended up cutting two of everything, and that worked out pretty well.

The measurements say 32-25-34, but I think that would make for a baggy dress. If you made it exactly like it says to, it would easily be at least one inch bigger than your measurements everywhere. Fortunately, the bodice fitting can be adjusted when you put the zipper in the back. The waist fit, but I cinched up the bust so it wouldn't gape.

My only complaint about this pattern is it did not have lines to shorten the bodice. The dress would be perfect if I had attached the skirt about half an inch higher. But I am very short, so that would not be an issue for most people.

Overall, it is a beautiful dress, it fits very well and is perfect for summer here in New Orleans (with the gathered and lined bodice, you can easily skip a bra). I can totally see making this again in a different fabric- easy and cute!

The fabric is a bright purple with tiny white polka dots, not blue like in the pix.

I have bought the fabric for my next dress- and I think I will start it tonight.
