</div>It happened to be beautiful weather that year in Chicago so we had a very nice time trick or treating and Max looked cute in his costume. After awhile we took off his arm and leg shields, as they were making it hard for him to go up and down the steps to every door. Whoops, that was an unseen design flaw!</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>Claire wore Max's old fox costume which I had stored in the basement. I just went to link to the post, only to find I never posted it! I actually didn't have to alter it at all, and I left the feet on because they fit into her shoes. That actually worked well so it wouldn't ride up her legs in the stroller and make her cold. </div><div><br></div><div>Only a year and a half ago, but they look so small ❤️</div><div><br></div><div>-Molly</div>Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09365849029941325950noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624632908706778151.post-48723910604617139012020-02-09T10:34:00.001-06:002020-02-09T10:34:58.506-06:00Vintage Toy Box RefinishI bought this toy box at an estate sale in 2014 when pregnant with Max. https://mollysews.blogspot.com/2014/10/estate-sale-loot-sewing-and-baby.html?m=1<div><br></div><div>It then sat on the back porch/in that basement for years waiting to be repainted. </div><div><br></div><div>Claire turned two in September and now I have energy again and am feeling like a real person, or as much as you can when working with two little kids. 😂</div><div><br></div><div>I seem to only get stuff done during school breaks, and following that pattern this was painter over Thanksgiving break. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I was on maternity leave for Halloween and Claire is the easiest baby ever, so I was able to sew for a week straight and make Max an AMAZING bird costume! I asked him at least twenty times and he consistently said he wanted to be a bird- which is super impressive for a 2.5 yr old. Then, after I finished the costume and the day before Halloween, he said he wanted to be a dragon. LOL.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Claire was an egg. Makes them theme costumes and super easy!</div>

If I were to make it again, I would either source red elastic online or cover the straps so that they don't contrast so much. However, every person we passed while Trick or Treating LOVED his costume and Max was so happy!<br />

Well, I am on summer break and have a tiny bit o time to blog. I can't believe I haven't even written anything for 2018. Wow. It's almost like having two little kids and working full-time takes up most of my energy and time. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have sewn stuff though! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For Xmas, I made Max and Claire matching stocking to match the ones I made for Andrew, T-Rex and myself a few years ago. I had managed to find another piece of that vintage fabric on Etsy, which was amazingly lucky.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV1qG3WgHbWhhrX9dL0OFqzS-3EkCgTpd4UsVlkQG3I-QRDx-_S2fqAb6p3fREoE0jjiSeNSHqe90DPOsaErT39RSsQM3A2Qsxl5sk43CRz2GKq5HHMjq6Fqj-M6TdMr5nxPZrxFbQHrs/s1600/DSC05171.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV1qG3WgHbWhhrX9dL0OFqzS-3EkCgTpd4UsVlkQG3I-QRDx-_S2fqAb6p3fREoE0jjiSeNSHqe90DPOsaErT39RSsQM3A2Qsxl5sk43CRz2GKq5HHMjq6Fqj-M6TdMr5nxPZrxFbQHrs/s400/DSC05171.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
My previos ones are tacky, with gold trim and two rows of pompoms, so I made Max and Claire's much simpler.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-jgZ2pi78lw5EfcwXhmhtAS1vRFNu9fxCn8iAD3MFYSUmhRMa5o13Ul9numBAbLiQTF9ExEAbAcO6XKVwUsiEwc3meQQfVV9Sfr_PIzRGIehCQPvVnOoJoeub_hgwfhOzD_Atecqt7gY/s1600/5E3EDB60-A117-489E-A1A3-C74A9D4B629F.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-jgZ2pi78lw5EfcwXhmhtAS1vRFNu9fxCn8iAD3MFYSUmhRMa5o13Ul9numBAbLiQTF9ExEAbAcO6XKVwUsiEwc3meQQfVV9Sfr_PIzRGIehCQPvVnOoJoeub_hgwfhOzD_Atecqt7gY/s400/5E3EDB60-A117-489E-A1A3-C74A9D4B629F.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Max had fun eating the candy out of all the stockings.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also made these little hats with leftover fabric. I had also made Claire two Xmas themed knock-off Zipadee Zip sleep suit for Cliare, but apparently didn't take a single picture of her in it in the .005 seconds before she outgrew it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I tried to take some cute pictures, but Claire was still too floppy and they all were terrible!<br />

Max and I had a fun summer together doing toddler yoga, taking a music class and swimming at the pool almost every day. It was our special time before he became a big brother!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Baby Claire was born in September and she is such a sweet, easy baby! We all love her so much and Max is being an excellent big brother giving her so many hugs and kisses, bringing her toys and helpfully yelling "baby's crying".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I had gestational diabetes this pregnancy, which I cheerfully do not recommend! I was able to have a VBAC and avoid a c-section, which made life and recovery so much easier.<br />

I am shorter than this model drawing lady and am going to simplify down to only (lol) seven buttons. So just picture it skipping the second, fourth, sixth and eighth rows.<br />

Which size is best?Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09365849029941325950noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624632908706778151.post-32510381952013945222017-01-03T12:14:00.000-06:002017-01-03T12:14:54.148-06:00Actually working on Vogue 755 coat!I pulled that coat out of the drawer it lives in and am working on it! I started this coat when we lived in New Orleans over five years ago and have since gotten married, had a baby who is almost two, gotten laid off and rehired, etc. Here is post detailing my (lack of) progress so far: <a href="https://mollysews.blogspot.com/2012/12/unfinished-project-lolz.html">click here!</a><br />
<br />
Here is the long ago pattern for a coat dress. I lengthened the sleeves.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGT3Y8f44EfaHJRAjbVpuoCZU8JjHGHz81qNifwTFGTDhccsLLqOJPs9pitvN1oMOB1j-QxMLzyK0ihC0w32X8gPEUDkP2akSFXhNRh7x0_LyWGybaLUNINIXJVyVnr7b26h8JG2Qau0o/s1600/image2+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGT3Y8f44EfaHJRAjbVpuoCZU8JjHGHz81qNifwTFGTDhccsLLqOJPs9pitvN1oMOB1j-QxMLzyK0ihC0w32X8gPEUDkP2akSFXhNRh7x0_LyWGybaLUNINIXJVyVnr7b26h8JG2Qau0o/s400/image2+%25281%2529.JPG" width="300" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSiHMweGLoiUbp-jexJ7J9QkZqeDLcU_xJVlLavCDFlHeZta-mvk6bHuhSa7yXBkXs84-xZ8i_QGoG3IFj_K2CSLSrUxtT41EDbb7xVZv6jjYB5bVvPvB5WnVfObXxtDR-5JfZVlGjwmE/s1600/image1+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSiHMweGLoiUbp-jexJ7J9QkZqeDLcU_xJVlLavCDFlHeZta-mvk6bHuhSa7yXBkXs84-xZ8i_QGoG3IFj_K2CSLSrUxtT41EDbb7xVZv6jjYB5bVvPvB5WnVfObXxtDR-5JfZVlGjwmE/s400/image1+%25281%2529.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
After some careful consideration, I have decided to not do the collar and cuff detail. The wool is too thick and the cuffs I made looked costume-like and awful. That was the point I stopped before it got shoved back in the drawer. I added the facings, although they haven't been pressed or anything; the ironing board is still on the back porch because we put the Xmas tree in the dining room. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I think it looks vintage, in an elegant way right now. The cuff and contrast collar put it over the top into the range of vintage clothes that I don't like anymore. When I started the coat, I was happy to sew vintage patterns and wear them no matter how silly they looked (and my middle school students were super enthusiastic!). I am older now and it's not my jam anymore. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
The back darts and the pockets at the waist did not line up perfectly. I was annoyed with Past Molly and her lazy sewing, until I took them all out numerous times and tries to fix them. The left pocket is 90% better as well as the left dart. The right dart is still a little off, but it was the best I can do. The right pocket is improved, but still far from perfect. There are so many layers of heavy (underlined) wool that my poor Singer (a champ of a machine) can barely press through it and it was absolutely infuriating. So, I will live with imperfection.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuAdQtGYopwEG6PY96-hRsAZ52PSn1S3644NqF1trc0UFg9EkujW_OwokdAXwmNeSf-oSIy7bvjv3x0-K6aEm4anKsItGdQ93tTDWKU1J960EGl3OGNxuH8i7roCoi8qU3rxg7WKvRtqQ/s1600/image4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuAdQtGYopwEG6PY96-hRsAZ52PSn1S3644NqF1trc0UFg9EkujW_OwokdAXwmNeSf-oSIy7bvjv3x0-K6aEm4anKsItGdQ93tTDWKU1J960EGl3OGNxuH8i7roCoi8qU3rxg7WKvRtqQ/s320/image4.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I ordered plum Bemberg lining from Vogue Fabrics and am waiting for it to arrive.<br />
<br />
Two hopes for tips:<br />
<br />
1.Bagging a lining - Can you believe I have never done that? I rarely make jackets and I think I hand sewed the whole cape lining which was horrific. Tips? Good tutorials?<br />
<br />
2. Online resources for buttons for this coat. I am kind of thinking brass or metal with a vintage feel? I am going to simplify the number of buttons down from 15. Cost is not really a large factor because they are the focal point of the coat.<br />
<br />
Happy New Year to you all!!<br />
<br />Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09365849029941325950noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624632908706778151.post-12321679485597998422016-08-24T09:08:00.002-05:002016-08-24T09:17:52.641-05:00The Nursery is Complete!!<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Now, I know that Max is 18 months old now...but we just finished his room! We painted it light green before he was born and I painted some art for him while I was pregnant since I was a long-term sub for an art teacher and my students were painting, too. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The walls are a light green that is really hard to photograph. When we were in Oregon recently, my mom and I chose some fabric for the curtains. I got it at Jo-Ann because I wanted to use a coupon. I needed ten yards and didn't want to spend a fortune. We chose one with a white background and baby animals. The green in the curtains matches the walls. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Fabric close-up:</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirifhXOUabxGhIoeguQTEj4GbnCEkmvLVbqW51JwgXtHGGsBtrJ8CYr2Iex4A7mJarFd-RRRbX9V95SgC6LRMC8MKZ_JQkwH6pVDpgHKOt7P8Tjz9qJViv12KnU3T5TDcGDNmfTrJ8QD0/s1600/IMG_5137.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirifhXOUabxGhIoeguQTEj4GbnCEkmvLVbqW51JwgXtHGGsBtrJ8CYr2Iex4A7mJarFd-RRRbX9V95SgC6LRMC8MKZ_JQkwH6pVDpgHKOt7P8Tjz9qJViv12KnU3T5TDcGDNmfTrJ8QD0/s400/IMG_5137.JPG" width="300" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I made three panels for each window and they turned out fine. There are Ikea shades behind them, but we couldn't get ones that matched the width of the windows exactly, so some light comes in on the sides. The curtains have solved that problem and also make the room look a lot more "finished". </span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"> The curtains also match the quilt my mom made for Max. The quilt has lions, monkeys and giraffes on it and it is super cute. Max likes to point to the monkey and make oh oh ah ah noises now.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"> Here is my "artwork". While they are cute and I am reasonably okay at drawing and painting, I did not come up with any of these ideas myself. Just to be totally clear- I found all of the images on Etsy searching for "baby art" and then drew them by hand, made a few changes and then painted them. I will put my inspiration as a link under each one, if I can find it</span><br />

I really like sewing knits now and I want to up my game and have a professional looking end result. From looking online, it seems like it will be about 400 dollars, which is a lot, but I will have it forever so it is an investment.<br />
<br />
From online research, I have found:<br />
<br />
Janome CoverPro 900CX<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>It has really good reviews and can use regular spools of thread instead of serger cones. </li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
Brother 2340CV CoverStitch<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Some people say releasing the thread is really difficult. It does do a triple thread, while the Janome only does a double. Is that even something I would use, though?</li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
I am leaning towards the Janome... Do any of you have either of these and some advice?<br />
<br />
(Last time I went to JoAnn, I wanted to see the display machines and they didn't have either to view AND they had rearranged the whole fabric section and eliminated at least 2-3 rows of fabric. Ugh)Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09365849029941325950noreply@blogger.com20tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624632908706778151.post-69458239954159754992016-01-16T19:58:00.003-06:002016-01-16T19:58:50.991-06:00Vintage Pledge 2015 Skirt- 1940s Advance 2469<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
I didn't even technically make a vintage pledge for 2015, since I was already huge and pregnant in January and I had somewhat low expectations for how much sewing I would get done. That eventually was lowered down to nearly zero.<br />
<br />
Kerry of Kestrel Makes did ask me early in the year to do one of the pattern stash interviews and being an experienced mom, she let me put it off until the fall. I delusionally expected to get it done during my maternity leave. Ha. I was featured in <a href="http://www.kestrelmakes.com/2015/11/pattern-stash-interview-molly-sews.html">December</a>. I now can see I have some serious pattern hoarding (and finding) contenders in the Chicago area like <a href="http://www.kestrelmakes.com/2015/02/vintagepledge-stash-interview-tasha.html">Tasha</a>, <a href="http://www.astitchingodyssey.com/2015/06/vintagepledge-stash-interview-michelle.html">Michelle</a>, and <a href="http://www.astitchingodyssey.com/2015/10/vintagepledge-stash-interview-zilredloh.html">Liz</a>. They have some awesome patterns.<br />
<br />
Anyways, this was my first sewing project for post-baby Molly for 2015. Let me take you way back in my time machine to around September. I was back at work and I though about making a skirt. I had a huge piece of plaid flannel-feeling fabric from the year before that I bought at Jo-Ann- I think they are called Plaiditudes.<br />
<br />
I wanted to use Advance 2469, view 1 with the cool pockets. Right after school started, I had not lost the last ten baby pounds so I knew I needed to increase the waist from the 24 of the pattern to the 28 of my current size. This pattern is from the 40s and is completely unmarked; it just has the holes of various sizes for marking and you figure it out.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img height="400" src="http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110420002640/vintagepatterns/images/e/e6/Advance_2469_(resized).jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;" width="266" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">From the <a href="http://vintagepatterns.wikia.com/wiki/Advance_2469">Vintage Pattern Wiki</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Okay, so just to recap, after having a baby and not sewing anything for myself nearly a year, I decided that my first project back should include:<div>
<ol>
<li>Grading a pattern, which I rarely do</li>
<li>Matching plaid, which I suck at</li>
<li>Using an unmarked pattern from the 40s</li>
</ol>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
Great, can you see where this is heading? lol</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Let's start with grading the pattern. You know, I added a half-inch to the outside of each piece and it does correspond accordingly. It's just that at work, I am always on my feet as the co-teacher walking around the room and helping students. So after going back to work, those ten pounds melted away and I am back at my original weight (though jiggly). So the skirt doesn't fit and I can't take it in because of the....</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyQ1DOWIXd9EYy_XrzGPMG6onJioeLkovAM6ARArG5vEOasMktH4kTpTQgI_TfCqAb45dQqXcv-mmHqk-jzLlP8yEt-FJD9_vYe6hTi5gTYgbcHOvZtzhqiB0IFbOjkc5684E1yvJP1sg/s1600/DSC01867.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyQ1DOWIXd9EYy_XrzGPMG6onJioeLkovAM6ARArG5vEOasMktH4kTpTQgI_TfCqAb45dQqXcv-mmHqk-jzLlP8yEt-FJD9_vYe6hTi5gTYgbcHOvZtzhqiB0IFbOjkc5684E1yvJP1sg/s400/DSC01867.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Front</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Attempt at matching plaid! This plaid has a somewhat weird repeat and I had a really hard time trying to match it while cutting on the bias. I did a fairly good job cutting it out, but the fabric is thick and I still don't have a walking foot. So in places the layer fed unevenly and the plaid is slightly off. I am not sure why I thought bias cut skirt + plaid = magic in the first place... so if I took it in along the side seams, the plaid matching would be off by even more and would be super visible.<br />

The pockets are the cool feature of this pattern and they are really unique. They are only sewn on in one row of stitching under the flap. So the pocket bag and the flap are both floating.<br />

With a baby and a full-time job, finishing this took a few weeks. The thought of then hemming it by hand was just too much. I rustled through my notions and found some vintage, black, iron-on hem tape and I went to town! It worked as advertised and it gave the hem a little more volume, a little like horsehair braid dialed down a bit.<br />

The back lined up fairly well in regards to the plaid. For some reason, like forgetting how to sew after such a long break, I thought it would be smart to use an invisible zipper. I don't have an IZ foot, so I just used a regular foot. This led to the infamous bottom-of-the-zipper-poof where it looks like "maybe that lady has a tail? under her skirt?"<br />

Probably should have reinforced the waistband with something too...<br />
<br />
I can't blame the pattern really. Using an unmarked pattern just expected a little too much of my skills/memory after such a long break from sewing anything slightly complicated for myself. I think the last thing I made for myself was the same maternity pattern three times before Christmas of last year...<br />

Shopping for the baby is very satisfying, so I bough a bunch of cute French clothes. Some are 18 months sizes, so he is not quite big enough until the Spring probably.<br />

One afternoon we went up to Montmartre to walk around and stop at Chateau Rouge. That is the metro stop near the African market and all the wax fabric stores. Two summers ago, I shopped around and couldn't decide on anything. This time, there was a new shop that had just opened. It was very organized and had new stock that wasn't picked over- lots of good prints with different colorways in each.<br />
<br />
All three are the full panel that you get, six meters or something like that. The left one is pink and green with a shiny gold design; it is hard to see unless you click on the picture and make it bigger. I really like the primary color one in the center with chickens. The right is blues and greens with an abstract plant design.<br />

Max is too big for the Baby Bjorn now. I missed the December Babywearing International meeting and there isn't one in January, so we don't have any other carriers right now. I think this weekend I am going to wash one and try some back carries. He is only 20 lbs, but he is too heavy to wear on my front anymore.<br />
<br />
We also went to Marche St. Pierre and I bought some light polyester prints that will make beautiful dresses for the spring and summer. I don't have a specific plan in mind, so I bought two meters of each, just to be safe.<br />

They are all very drapey and light. I hope to make something cool! I am back to my previous weight and shape (minus the squishy stomach muscles), so now sewing isn't also a huge trial-and-error, fitting exercise. I can just go back to my old size and modifications!<br />

<br />
I made this yoga bag quite a while ago, perhaps during the summer before I went back to work?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi761dZ2D8mi9VYlvFPJP0OG_AH_HonEQja2s4wr8cQURn5vMWktEtfON6gPvMTPESKTm_cefolJG4WW1ASFd_EtDkjEkaQcorHSjPb7Gz5i5Z1pUOQbApPZa7T9ApGbheFAvxihOkIOsE/s1600/1030.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi761dZ2D8mi9VYlvFPJP0OG_AH_HonEQja2s4wr8cQURn5vMWktEtfON6gPvMTPESKTm_cefolJG4WW1ASFd_EtDkjEkaQcorHSjPb7Gz5i5Z1pUOQbApPZa7T9ApGbheFAvxihOkIOsE/s400/1030.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
I spent a long time on it- probably too much time, to be honest. I measured my thick yoga mat and made a rectangle. The base is a circle and I math-ed it out so it fit perfectly. I added the big pocket for a water bottle; the neck has elastic so the bottle doesn't fly out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwrgmiM_ebhQyNjVpdvSiHo6IRqBwR8Ohgu4wS0xcLz-xEs0nSy-QdfF3KObdWFT6ORfAa2A5WnmVq-z6EitZlel66NT7Lqqz_iTFFwaClMTQwWDNfPqbHTa77g2u7oiKnOimNTwgK-B0/s1600/1032.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwrgmiM_ebhQyNjVpdvSiHo6IRqBwR8Ohgu4wS0xcLz-xEs0nSy-QdfF3KObdWFT6ORfAa2A5WnmVq-z6EitZlel66NT7Lqqz_iTFFwaClMTQwWDNfPqbHTa77g2u7oiKnOimNTwgK-B0/s400/1032.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
The bottom of that pocket is a semi-circle, which prevents it from sagging too much.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It closes at the top with a drawstring tie. The drawstring flap should have been more shallow, so it balloons up at the top a little too much. The shoulder strap is a really nice 2 inch wide braided trim. The fabric and trim are all from Jo-Ann's, since this was a spontaneous project. I had been using a fabric shopping bag for all of my yoga stuff.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIH22rNz1tIwwaKW2n1uLcHd1hxX_7RK9rscZtlh_hyK-qY5mu_fdA7UiKrf-3boQv9n_TNTqWNG6W3gR_uZ3fymx4mdwyZKjAF434EAEDC-JF0qdlyQ8RlJ1C6ngYDVKd6iyVY3D1G_U/s1600/1031.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIH22rNz1tIwwaKW2n1uLcHd1hxX_7RK9rscZtlh_hyK-qY5mu_fdA7UiKrf-3boQv9n_TNTqWNG6W3gR_uZ3fymx4mdwyZKjAF434EAEDC-JF0qdlyQ8RlJ1C6ngYDVKd6iyVY3D1G_U/s400/1031.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
Near the top of the bag, I made three pockets. One is for cash or my credit card. One fits my keys. The other can hold a lip balm and kleenex. That's basically all I need for yoga!<br />
<br />
I spent an absurdly long time matching the print to make them invisible. I used the plastic baby snaps to close them, which is kind of a pain to use. The pockets are annoying to use because they are a bit too small for each item because I didn't account for enough ease. That makes them poof out when in use.<br />
<br />
~~~<br />
<br />
So the yoga bag worked reasonably well, and then I went back to work in September and haven't gone to yoga since. I do work on my feet all day as a special education co-teacher, which helped me finally drop back to my pre-baby weight! I do need to work on toning my sad and stretched out stomach muscles though!<br />
<br />
Sweet baby Max is now ten months old (maybe 8 or 9 in this picture) and I hope that for 2016 I can sew one project a month. I miss sewing, but it is so hard to sew when I am so tired. I need mental energy to sew, otherwise everything is backwards or wrong ad I spend more time with the seam ripper than actually making things!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br />
Here's hoping that 2016 has more sewing in my future!<br />
I am only ten pounds above my pre-pregnancy weight, so that's good! I have started going to yoga again and working on toning up.<br />
<br />
Being slightly larger than before and also breastfeeding is making me reevaluate my wardrobe. I bought some new jeans since my old ones don't fit anymore, which was great. That made it so I had more than just leggings to wear and made me feel more like a human again! I got rid of a garbage bag full of clothes that are either too small or won't work with breastfeeding. Now I need a summer wardrobe that will work.<br />
<br />
Mostly everything I have seen online is nursing tank tops with the hooks, button downs, and wrap tops or dresses. I am just wondering if you ladies have any tips for nursing through the summer months? What are some essential pieces that I should buy? Summer is so short here, I think I could easily get by with less than ten "outfits".<br />
<br />
I also want to try to sew a few items (maybe three?) as well. I think the <a href="http://threadtheory.ca/products/camas">Camas blouse</a> by Thread Theory with either short or no sleeves would work very well. I saw a cute button down sleeveless dress on Instagram, I know it was an indie pattern, but I forgot the name... Any other recommendations for patterns that would work and be quick and easy to sew?<br />
<br />
And to leave on a funny note, I saw Gertie released a new pattern:<br />
All I could think was "You could turn view A into a nursing top if you cut two holes under the ties" How funny would that be? :)Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09365849029941325950noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624632908706778151.post-17261606385951172172015-06-09T14:22:00.001-05:002015-06-10T16:37:40.497-05:00Vintage Clothes ShoppingI spend a lot of time on my phone, like when the baby is nursing. I have been wasting a lot of time on Instagram lately (@mollysews but it is mostly baby pictures at this point).<br />
<br />
There are a few vintage clothes sellers that I follow on Instagram. I (and lots of you) love vintage clothes and I use them for sewing inspiration since they are often horrifically expensive and usually not anywhere close to fitting me.<br />
<br />
Two points for discussion:<br />
<br />
1. I really really enjoy looking at the clothes, which are often very simple 50s dresses, and then looking at how much they cost. They are often well over $100 and so simple that you could buy a similar modern pattern on sale for 99 cents and then make a replica for less than $30. That is really why I got into sewing; I am so cheap at heart and love to gloat about how much money I saved (which only makes sense when you either talk about vintage or designer, not regular everyday stuff). Do any of you like copying expensive stuff and the feeling super proud? Mmmm, my favorite!<br />
<br />
2. I see them tagging and labeling so MANY dresses as 40s and 50s and they are often very clearly not. Frankly, the 40s were 75 years ago and there really cannot be that many pristine and intact pieces to sell. I think lots of times they are similar styles from the 70s and it's just wishful thinking. I see the same thing with 80s dresses that were inspired by the 50s. Sometimes they tag it as "inspired" but not always. Granted, I can't see the labels and that would help determine if they are or aren't. I know a lot of the styles and features that date an outfit to a time period from sewing from vintage patterns for so long, but I am sure lots of their buyers have no clue. But then again, they may not care. Do you think there can really be THAT many pieces (shoes and dresses) from the 40s or 50s?<br />
<br />
Either way, I love looking at the pictures and thinking about how I could and would sew that myself!Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09365849029941325950noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624632908706778151.post-65325839831916693862015-04-30T17:20:00.000-05:002015-04-30T17:23:38.636-05:00SHB Sewalong: Cloth Diaper Covers and Fun with Snaps!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used the Green Pepper Patterns 554 to make these cloth diaper covers. I bought two beforehand to investigate, but as purchasing each one can be 10-15 dollars, I knew I would make my own. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I combined the pattern design with a <a href="http://www.adreamcrafter.com/2013/06/how-to-sew-your-own-cloth-diapers-free.html">blog tutorial</a> I read. The outside is flannel and the inside is the PUL fabric that feels like plastic and keeps the baby's clothes dry. The cloth diaper is inside of that, so you only need to change the cover if it gets totally soaked or there is a poopsplosion.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I cut out three at once in size small after Maxwell was born. The pattern is really easy and you can make each diaper in less than 30 minutes once you know the drill.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Version 1:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The front is a little short, so the diaper tries to poke out the top. This leads to wet belly and too many changes of clothes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Version 2:<br />
<br />
I tried to add elastic to the front to tighten it up more, but failed to realize that topstitching the gap closed would make the elastic not gather. Duh. I added a seventh snap in the center so it could be snapped tighter.<br />
Next time I make them, I am going to make the next size up, of course. I think I will make the front a bit longer so it will go up higher and prevent the diaper poking out. It's a good pattern and I totally recommend it! I knew nothing about diaper covers and it was really helpful.<br />
<br />
Notes:<br />
<br />
PUL is cheaper at fabrics.com and a yard will make at least 3-4 of these.<br />
<br />
You do not need a zigzag, I did it all with a straight stitch since I have a vintage machine.<br />
<br />
My diaper service gave us an info sheet and it said that if it gets stained, you can lay the PUL in the sun and it will bleach itself- true and works!<br />
<br />
Use poly thread not cotton: I used cotton and now it is stained orange from baby breastmilk poops.<br />
<br />
Plastic snaps are so much better than metal ones!! If I stamp it crooked, I can just snip the pin part with scissors and fix it! I'm never going back to metal!! I bought the Babyville snaps at JoAnn, but the bought the KAM pliers and more snaps based on online reviews.<br />
<br />
<br />
I will be making more baby stuff, but technically the SHB Sewalong is over. I didn't get too much done in April, but at least it motivated me to post about stuff. It made me feel somewhat productive!Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09365849029941325950noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624632908706778151.post-24496510666095145822015-04-30T15:46:00.002-05:002015-04-30T15:46:49.468-05:00SHB Sewalong: Cloth Diaper Diaper Bag<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My friend Ahnna got us the cloth diaper bag on the right. We are using cloth diapers and it did not cross my mind that hmmm maybe you need something to hold dirty diapers when you are out, since you can't just throw them away!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I thought it might be good to make a second, in case one is drying. For days in future when Max and I actually go places.... :)</div>
Super easy to make:<br />
<br />
Traced the original, installed a zipper on the top (a 12" white one), sewed up the side seams.<br />
<br />
For the inside I used some of the PUL (I think its polyurethane laminate?) fabric that is used for the cloth diaper liners as well. I bought it from fabrics.com in white so I could use it for a bunch of projects. JoAnn has some, but it was 15 bucks a yard and only in goofy prints.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made a second pouch for the inside and topstitched to attach it to the zipper tape.<br />
However, it is motivating me to blog about them, so that has to count for something!<br />
<br />
I bought some cute Mink style fabric from Fabrics.com after being disappointed at the selection at JoAnn (shocking, right?) I used the green forest creature print for the Boppy cover.<br />
My aunt gave me her old pillow when we were in Oregon for Xmas and it came with a blue cover. I thought it would be smart to have a backup, which was smart as it has been covered in an assortment of baby fluids.<br />
As for the sewing:<br />
<br />
I used a pattern, Simplicity 4225, which I bought for a dollar on sale. It mostly fit the Boppy pillow, but I had to shorten the ends of the U and round them a little more to get a better fit. I just used it for the shape- they want you to use velcro to close it. The real cover has a zipper on the outside, so I just copied that. I had a vintage zipper that matched the green fairly well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
It was really easy to make and probably took less than an hour to make.<br />
Installment 2 of my Small Human Being Sewalong:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I knew we would want some kind of baby carrier for babywearing, aka having hands that are free!! In week two of Andrew's paternity leave, he held the baby and kept me company while I whipped this together. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Previously, I did a bit of research as I had absolutely no plans to pay upwards of $50 for a Moby wrap or a Boba wrap or whatever. Essentially, it is a very long rectangle of knit fabric. It should be about two or three yards of 60" wide knit, and then you cut it into three strips of about 20" wide. Sew them together and wham-bam-babywrap. </div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cradle Hold</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I bought this fabric on Goldhawk Road when Andrew and I were in London in (gasp) 2013. It really puts my fabric hoarding into perspective when I can look back on my blog and see how long ago I bought it. I really love it!<br />
<br />
At first I was reluctant to use it, but if I made it into a dress I would only wear it sometimes, and then for only a season or two. Making it into the baby wrap means that I will use it every day- all the time since my little spider monkey only wants to sleep on my chest. Plus, since the fabric is almost intact, I can always make it into clothes later if I want to.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ta Daaaaaaaaaa!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Anyways, I made the wrap and then Andrew tried it out. I was still recovering from my stitches and was no shape to spend much time standing, much less wearing the baby. There are two holds for newborns, cradle hold (like how you hold them in your arms) and newborn hold (chest to chest with the baby's legs tucked in). We tried both, but they were not all that successful. He would enjoy it for less than 30 minutes maximum and then flip out.<br />
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">newborn hold</td></tr>
Finally, I searched online for other holds and discovered kangaroo hold. It is like the newborn hold, so it is still chest to chest, but the baby's legs hang out the bottom. You put him in the pouch, cross the X over your back, and then loop each half under the baby and between his legs so he is super secure.<br />
<br />
Max loves this one!! He loves to kick his legs wildly, so when his legs were tucked in he was very cramped and mad. This one allows him to move his arms and legs, and he is super happy. Usually he falls asleep in less than five minutes.<br />
I am going to count this as a sewing project because I am totally sleep deprived and adjusting to being a mom. I sewed one seam to hold two strips of fabric together and then did not finish the edges because it's a knit. Still counts!!!<br />
So congratulate me on my sewing success (haha) and reassure me that the sleeps-only-on-my-chest phase will not last until I am sending him off to college...right? right? guys?Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09365849029941325950noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624632908706778151.post-83878377363663638602015-04-11T16:04:00.002-05:002015-04-22T16:52:42.884-05:00SHB Sewalong: Baby Bunting for a Carseat<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I don't think I have ever participated in a sew-along before, which is amazing since I have been blogging since 2009 and sewing since 2006? I usually have trouble following along to other people's time tables, what with work, and life, and being a giant procrastinator. However, this sew-along corresponds with my time and interests perfectly so why not. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The SHB (Small Human Being) Sewalong is for the month of April and is anything baby related. It is being hosted by <a href="http://cationdesigns.blogspot.com/2015/03/introducing-small-human-being-sewalong.html">Cindy</a>, <a href="http://fivemuses.blogspot.com/">Clio</a> and <a href="http://www.polkadotoverload.com/">Mikhaela</a>, who all have small babies. Do you ever find a blog and feel like you're kind of stalking someone's life (in a positive way)? I love reading Cindy's (Cation Designs) blog since she sews, teaches middle school and has a baby boy who is a few months older than mine. I am, for the first time, interested in other people's babies. I suppose that sounds terrible, but now I am interested in what to look forward to!!</div>
On to my sewing:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I bought this pattern a long time ago at an estate sale, I think. Kwik Sew 1827, from 1987. It is for two baby buntings, for a newborn and a bigger baby. It always made me laugh so much, since I think the baby in pink looks somewhat like a vagina. When I have a girl, I will make a pink one just for laughs. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As Maxwell is a boy, I decided to choose something other than pink. I roamed up and down the huge wall of fleece at JoAnns. Really, if aliens landed on Earth and visited JoAnn, they would think that 90% of humans' wardrobes are made up of polar fleece. I chose a cute space print, since Andrew loves space so much.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The pattern is three pieces: front, back and hood facing. I bought the coordinating flannel at the same time and didn't even realize it (baby brain?) so that worked out well. The drawstring is from fabrics.com.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT7xkP0UH1yGo_sJkFLZSuUsQ9KPYsf-TGs8tnkYgt8w9ucEVlkYT_DeECd-kcspa24PS-d2Asib8fJ2cFD7VEuUHG5GedlCuR8GDfM59bB6_lfnqYzSkw-LXGVtDhAInGCQY-lQM_EnY/s1600/DSC00376.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT7xkP0UH1yGo_sJkFLZSuUsQ9KPYsf-TGs8tnkYgt8w9ucEVlkYT_DeECd-kcspa24PS-d2Asib8fJ2cFD7VEuUHG5GedlCuR8GDfM59bB6_lfnqYzSkw-LXGVtDhAInGCQY-lQM_EnY/s1600/DSC00376.JPG" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
I thought I had lost the instructions, so I winged it. That wasn't too hard- zipper first, hood facing, sew front to back and then insert the drawstring. I then found the instructions right after I had finished. The fabric was purchased when I was pregnant, so that was baby brain, but I made this after he was born, so let's blame that on sleep deprivation!<br />
<br />
Making the whole thing probably took less than two hours, including cutting.<br />
Since the pattern was made in 1987, I googled car seats in 1987. Sure enough, they only go over the shoulder and clip between the legs. Time has rendered view A obsolete, unless you just need a fleece newborn pod.<br />
Either way, a funny pattern and something I made for the baby!!Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09365849029941325950noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624632908706778151.post-84790924295411450462015-03-27T17:16:00.000-05:002015-03-27T17:16:29.192-05:00Meet my Sweet Baby!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: center;">One month ago, I had our baby! It was a scheduled cesarean and went just as expected. He arrived at 8:10 am and weighed 8 lbs 1 oz and was 20.5 inches long. Andrew and I are both so happy and I am in awe of the adorable baby I grew inside of me!! He is already getting to be so much bigger and changing so much. I am really happy that I get to say home with him through August and I have recovered from my surgery- it was not the end of the world after all! :)<br />
<br />
I have already made a few baby related sewing projects, so I will post those as I find time. Lately he only wants to sleep on me, so that is limiting my activities- baby snuggles make that worth it! I have been Instagramming a lot lately since its easier than writing a blog post- I am mollysews on Instagram.<br />
<br />
As for T-Rex, he is adjusting very well. He was such a spoiled only child that I was kind of worried, but he is a smart dog and is adapting really fast. He knows he needs to stay back from the baby and is getting used to the interesting sounds Max makes, but he still gets people food and to sleep in our bed so not everything is different!Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09365849029941325950noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624632908706778151.post-68570897973831624812015-02-21T10:14:00.000-06:002015-02-21T10:14:57.004-06:00My Final Maternity Dress- Simplicity 1360 Again<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As I am now 39 weeks pregnant, this will be my final contribution to my maternity "wardrobe" of things I made. I really only ended up making five dresses and three skirts. I was feeling fairly peppy until January, when my favorite thing became taking a nap after work. So not a whole lot going on around here sewing-wise. </div>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Since it was my third attempt, the knot looks the best on this one. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made this from that same pattern, Simplicity 1360, as my other two (<a href="http://mollysews.blogspot.com/2014/12/simplicity-1360-stylish-maternity-dress.html">floral print here</a> and <a href="http://mollysews.blogspot.com/2015/01/a-nice-green-dress-for-xmas-simplicity.html">green one</a> here). This one is a knit from Jo-Ann and it is really static-clingy. I wore this over leggings and with a slip and it still spends all day trying to climb my legs, which you can see in some of the pictures. The floral wrinkles insanely when it is washed, but the print is busy enough to hide it. The green one doesn't have any major problems, maybe since that is the bamboo rayon I bought from fabrics.com?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My only tip for making these is to try it on after you sew the front to the back and really pull and tug on the knot. Most of the time, pulling will open up some kind of gap either above or below the knot that you then need to sew up. Otherwise you end up with a hole directly between the boobs... unless that's what you're going for ;)</div>
<br />
It is great for its expansion capabilities- I can still wear it at nine months and it still has some drape in the front. Less on the sides.<br />
<br />
The last few weeks have been really busy and hectic. The baby decided to turn breech about 3 weeks ago and we were trying everything to get him to turn head-down again. Went to a chiropractor, did acupuncture, the moxibustion where you burn incense next to your little toe, laying in all the weird positions from the spinningbabies website, talking to him, flashlight on where you want his head to go, and so on.<br />
<br />
Finally we tried the external version on Tuesday, where the doctor pushes on your stomach to try and physically turn the baby head down. That was really painful, but unsuccessful. So unless he magically turns before his due date, we will be scheduling a cesarean soon. Not quite what I had in mind, but I am getting used to the idea.<br />
<br />
<br />
I have one more week of work (or less, depending on the baby's agenda) and now I am moving on to sewing baby things finally.<br />
<br />
I will post a few more things this week, hopefully, but then I might fall off the earth for awhile!! Wish us luck with our new baby!Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09365849029941325950noreply@blogger.com9
