Tweed Pencil Skirt

I made McCalls 5817 on the left, just the skirt. I wanted it because it had a curved waistband and double kick pleats on the back.
Hmm, could have used a mirror...some ironing, or andrew telling me my slip is hanging out...but it shows the shaping seams and the kick pleats. Let's try to ignore how all of my stripes are ever so slightly off. I tried!
Side, nice and sleek.
This was my "oops I didn't cut it on the fold" waistband. At least the plaid is on an angle. The first one wasn't and it looked really weird, like noticeable to someone who knows nothing about sewing.

Kick pleats with my slip I made recently.
Overall, pretty happy with it.
I already cut it out again in black wool, but I haven't put it together yet. I might buy some black Bemberg and line it and buy some extra for whatever jacket I end up making.

Although I made this a 10, and then had to take some in on the sides. After the 8 shorts were insanely tight? So I guess I don't know what size I am in McCalls...

  3. I totally agree about the weirdness in sizing. It is so frustrating!

  4. Can not wait to see it with the cape! I think the colors are going to look lovely together.

I'd say that trying to figure out pattern size and fit has been my biggest sewing obstacle, and I still am not 100% sure what I'm doing every time.
But I have found that knowing my own measurements plus how much ease I like in my garments, and then measuring the pattern flat (minus seam allowances, and darts) before I ever start cutting the fabric, has been immensely helpful. In fact, I never start a project now without measuring the pattern first - at least then I know if I'm even in the ballpark or not ;)

I've also started buying patterns based on my upper bust measurement and then altering the waist and hip (I usually have to do this anyway as my measurements span about three sizes in all the pattern companies).

I would highly recommend checking to see if your library has either 'Pattern Fitting with Confidence' or 'Fitting Finesse' by Nancy Zieman (basically the same book, one is just a newer edition). I've found that book to be incredibly helpful. It's super easy to read and follow - and this is coming from someone who can't stand reading sewing how-to books! They bore me to no end. Not to mention, I'd rather be sewing than reading about it!

  5. Great skirt. I love the plaids, very cute. And that slip is gorgeous under there. Very nice detail.

  6. Oh, me too... I am so glad I'm not the only one with this problem!! I'm an advanced beginner and Ive been sewing my own clothing recently. Can't figure out if I'm a pattern size 10 or I gained weight in my sleep overnight to a 12. So this has been a strange learning experience for me in companies and their sizes :) LOVE this skirt, it fits you so well!! And the slip underneath is so pretty!

  7. Cute skirt, especially with the little lace slip! I'm never the same size in patterns, even within the same brand, so don't feel bad! You're not alone :)

  8. So nice to see a lady that will wear a slip. Seems like most women don't even own a slip much less wear one now days.
